Commonly known as the purple mangosteen, it is a tropical evergreen tree with edible fruit native to the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. The tree grows from 6 to 25 m tall. The fruit of the mangosteen is sweet and tangy, juicy, somewhat fibrous, with fluid-filled vesicles and an inedible, deep reddish-purple colored exocarp when ripe.
Medicinal properties
Used in traditional medicine for diarrhea, dysentery, skin infections and fever. The pericarp of mangosteen-fruit has been used as a medicinal agent by Southeast Asians for centuries in the treatment of skin infections and wounds.
