They are native to the Maluku Islands, in Indonesia, and are commonly used as a spice, flavoring, or fragrance in consumer products. Cloves are the aromatic flower buds of its tree and are available throughout the year. It is an evergreen, grows up to 8 to 12 m tall, with large leaves and crimson flowers grouped in terminal clusters. 

 

Medicinal properties

Clove essential oil is traditionally used in the treatment of burns and wounds, and as a pain reliever in dental care as well as treating tooth infections and toothache. Cloves have been used for centuries in the treatment of vomiting, flatulence, nausea, liver, bowel and stomach disorders and as a stimulant for the nerves. A compound called Sesquiterpenes, isolated from clove were reported to have anti-carcinogenic activity
