A medium evergreen tree of the ebony family, usually 20m tall, bearing hard dark timber and small fruits, native to the Indian subcontinent’s forests. Flowers are unisexual and dioecious and fruits are as berries with commonly 4 seeds. 

Medicinal properties

Traditionlly, Diospyros species have antimicrobial, and anti-diarrheal uses. Bark and leaves are used for skin and digestive issues due to tannins. They have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, anti-diabetic, antibacterial, anthelmintic, antihypertensive, cosmeceutical and enzyme-inhibitory properties.
